The Cottage was built in a terrace of three houses in around 1780. The cottages were named Bankyfelin, meaning ‘bank of the mill’ as they sit just at the top of an old road leading to Glyhir Mill that was built to serve the Glynhir Estate. There is still an Old road that passes the Mill, crossed the river and up to the old Mansion. There was originally a Leat running past the back garden of the cottages that would lead to the Mill and then to down to the river Llwchwr. The cottages would serve as accommodation to workers of the Glynhir Estate. Which became a self sufficient running estate in the early 1700’s when it was bought by a French family named the ‘du Buissions’. The Estate originally compromised of a mansion, several farms, knife factory, dove cote, ice house, large walled gardens as well as other accommodation. The mansion to this day is still privately owned and running and still sits in around 220 acres of land. In the early 1800’s number 1 Bankyfelin was given to the community by Caroline Du Bussion of Glynhir mansion as a girls school, whilst number 2 Bankyfelin was the house for the head mistress. In the 1900’s the property went back to being a home.

We know that a lovely couple called Denzil and Rose rented the property for the price of £5 a year for 60 years from a Doctor who lived in Cornwall who owned the property but never visited. During their tenure, Denzil and Rose only had 1 bedroom, the downstairs living room, the utility room and tin shack lean too where the currant kitchen is now. There was no toilet at the property just a shed in the corner of the garden. We have been told that he grew lovely vegetables though… 1 Bankyfelin owned the majority of the garden shown in the photograph. Denzil and Rose lived in the cottage like this up until the early 90’s when they sadly had to move to a bungalow in the village. Our next door neighbour Gill remembers them very fondly. The Journey of Bancyfelin continues, hopefully for another 200 years.
